It’s not a secret that the PlayStation 3 got off to a bad start. The system and those that birthed it, riding high on the invulnerability of the PlayStation 2, approached the marketing of the black monolith with a high-minded hubris that was unfathomable. Early ads declined to show gamers actual gameplay, instead focusing on a series of increasingly bizarre scenarios, from creepy babies to oily tentacle monsters. In the space of two short years, the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360 eclipsed the goodwill hard earned by the incredibly fragile PS2, relegating Sony to a distant third place in both market share and mindshare.
