It’s a weak week on the PSN, devoted to Sonic’s 19th birthday. That means that there’s a lot of Sonic DLC that simply isn’t much of a bargain if you don’t have the games to go with it.

So what is worth it?

  • Blue Toad Murder Files can be sampled with Episode 1 for $1.49, and the entire series can be had for $26.
  • MAG Interdiction adds new maps, gameplay, and trophies for $9.99
  • Kick Ass is on sale for $9.99. Our review is here, we liked it.
  • Warhawk Fallen Star DLC is $1.99 – 75% off.
  • Red Dead Redemption “Outlaws to the End” Co-op Pack is free.
  • Little Big Planet has a free character download for the summer solstice.

All in all, it’d be pretty easy to ignore the PSN this week as we’ll be too busy playing Red Dead Co-op. Maybe it’s for the best.

In just a few days the world of Red Dead Redemption gets even larger with the free-to-download, and free-to-play (on PSN) co-op multiplayer pack, Outlaws to the End.

This pack drops on June 22, 2010, and will include six complete missions for up to eight players. While running the new missions players will earn additional multiplayer XP, and new trophies are up for grabs.

This is the first of three downloadable packs for this summer, with the other two being paid-for DLC.

I held off on writing my review of Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Old West until after I had a chance to play the online portion of it’s nearest cousin: Red Dead Redemption. I felt it was a fair decision; even though we’re looking at an independent studio’s effort and a triple A title from a major developer, the price delta and the limited points that of comparison add some balance.

That said, these are two very different games. Red Dead’s Free Roam mode lobby is a game unto itself, something you could spend hours with. The competitive multiplayer is good… but it’s completely eclipsed by the fast-paced five on five that you’ll find in Lead and Gold. Continue reading »

Red Dead Redemption hit the shelves last week, but it didn’t stay there long. As the latest release from Rockstar it joined the illustrious ranks of their top sellers as a day one hit, proving wrong all of the critics (well hello there, Michael Pachter) who said that a video game western just wouldn’t fly. I’m thrilled that gamers have given it a chance, because it’s absolutely worth every penny you’ll pay for it. Continue reading »

I’m a sucker for Westerns. There’s something about a lawless, sun-baked land where even the good guys are as rough around the edges as the bad guys that just speaks to me. Ever since I was a kid I’ve hankered for staples of the west like Shane and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I snapped up titles like Outlaws from Lucasarts, and Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist from Sierra Online. I plunked quarter after quarter into Time Traveller. In short: I’m the target demographic for Lead and Gold. Continue reading »
