Green Zone is an interesting film for Canadians to watch; just like The Hurt Locker before it we’re watching a current world event that we very well could have been part of. Both of those films carry a meaning for Americans that isn’t a reality for most Canadians: this isn’t our war. It’s chilling to think how different things could have been if we had been taken in by the same deception (or mistakes, depending on who you believe).

The plot of the film center on Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller, a man tasked with finding the weapons of mass destruction that the American Army was sent to war over. When his unit is sent on yet another fruitless search for WMDs, a local man alerts then to a meeting of high value targets taking place only a few kilometers away. This sets events in motion that  lead Miller across Baghdad and against his own comrades in arms in an effort to find the truth.

Green Zone plays like a Tom Clancy thriller, with fast moving shots, explosions, and Matt Damon playing Jason Bourne light. It’s well framed and the action moves well, without ever feeling like it’s overstaying its welcome. The dialogue is sharp and well written, and performances from the principles are good. 3D Dot Game Heroes is a game that, given the cruel nature of the universe, shouldn’t have been made. Thankfully, though, the folks at FROM software and Atlus Games shake their fist at the status quo, and have brought us yet another gem.

In 3D Dot Game Heroes you emerge in the kingdom of Dotnia, a fascinating place that has just made the transition from 2D to 3D. It is a land in peril, however, for an ancient evil (once imprisoned by half a dozen sages and orbs) is about to be unleashed by the Nefarious Bad Guy™. To top if off, the Princess is missing (shocking) and only you, the potential Hero of Dotnia® can save her! Continue reading »

One of the most memorable gaming experiences I’ve ever had in gaming was the time I spend with the original Xbox version of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The charming, lithe, acrobatic Prince who starred in that version of the game was the perfect extension of the “you’ve only got one hour to beat this” Prince of Persia that haunted the dreams of my childhood. It was a phenomenal continuation of the series, with a brilliant story, delightful dialog, and combat/platforming action that stood alone and unchallenged as my favourite third-person action-adventure for years. 3ddotheroesWatching the trailer for 3D Dot Game Heroes doesn’t just feel familiar; it’s the 2D adventures of days gone by (specifically The Legend of Zelda) writ large and in 3D. Even the music speaks to the game’s heritage, with a dramatic score made up of chip-tune synthesized swells. It’s a remarkably aware game, acknowledging directly that it is a work of reference and parody, and reveling in its own nature.
