With the tail end of UFC 115 on the way out of Vancouver, it’s a great time to dig into the action with UFC Undisputed 2010. This was an incredibly easy game to review: if you like UFC you can stop reading now and go buy it.

For the rest of you: if you buy UFC Undisputed 2010, be prepared for a steep learning curve, an insane amount of customization, and more depth than you ever thought could possibly be applied to a game where to men kick the crap out of each other.

Above all, UFC Undisputed 2010 is technical. Fighters are no longer limited to a single style, and the options for fighting, for improving skills, and for maintaining those skills are incredibly deep. If you’re looking for a simulator that’s going to draw you into its world and keep you there for weeks and/or months at a time, this is it. Continue reading »

I hate racing games. I love blur. From Bizarre Creations (the same people that birthed Project Gotham Racing and Geometry Wars) this multi-platform racing combat game stands alone on the market as an insane mashup between modern shooters and kart racing. At least one online forum has dubbed it “Call of Burnout 2: Modern Mario Kart” – and they’re right. This isn’t Modnation Racers and it certainly isn’t Split/Second. blur is a game all its own and it’s really, really good.

So what’s the deal with blur? Well, it’s a racing game that looks like a sim… but it’s not. It’s a kart racing game with licensed cars and an amazing array of weapons and power-ups that can totally change the game from second to second. Unlike Mario Kart Wii, blur doesn’t cheat; there are no instant-hit blue shells. If you’re skilled and out in front of the pack, you can win it…  but you better watch your back, because there are 19 players gunning for you. Continue reading »

The PlayStation 3′s use of Bluetooth is both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing in that you can choose whatever headset you’d like to connect up to, that the connection is wireless, and that the range is generally good. It’s a curse because many players simple don’t want to bother with the added expense or difficulty of pairing a Bluetooth headset.

Considering the quality of voice chat on PSN versus XBL however, that too may be a blessing; it could be that the lazy among us are also the most likely to spout racial epithets and rather nasty slurs. PSN isn’t perfect, but it’s a happy playground in comparison to my (extensive) experience on XBL.

So what’s the official recommend for gamers looking for a headset? Well, if you’re going wireless, Sony has their own branded offering for Bluetooth users. It’s roughly in the middle of the pack in relation to Bluetooth headsets, price wise. Continue reading »

3D Dot Game Heroes is a game that, given the cruel nature of the universe, shouldn’t have been made. Thankfully, though, the folks at FROM software and Atlus Games shake their fist at the status quo, and have brought us yet another gem.

In 3D Dot Game Heroes you emerge in the kingdom of Dotnia, a fascinating place that has just made the transition from 2D to 3D. It is a land in peril, however, for an ancient evil (once imprisoned by half a dozen sages and orbs) is about to be unleashed by the Nefarious Bad Guy™. To top if off, the Princess is missing (shocking) and only you, the potential Hero of Dotnia® can save her! Continue reading »

Red Dead Redemption hit the shelves last week, but it didn’t stay there long. As the latest release from Rockstar it joined the illustrious ranks of their top sellers as a day one hit, proving wrong all of the critics (well hello there, Michael Pachter) who said that a video game western just wouldn’t fly. I’m thrilled that gamers have given it a chance, because it’s absolutely worth every penny you’ll pay for it. Continue reading »
